“Air vodka, yoga mats, watches, no limit to make products out of CO2”
The “Best CO2 Utilisation 2020″ award, sponsored by Covestro and jointly organised by the Nova-Institute and CO2 Value Europe, aimed to promote the work of all CO2 recycling inventors and innovators. 13 projects across industrial sectors were submitted from all around the world.
The awards were delivered on the 24th of March during the 8th Conference on Carbon Dioxide as Feedstock for Fuels, Chemistry and Polymers. With the world’s first commercialised direct air capture (DAC) plants, our member Climeworks (Switzerland) has won the third price. Their sustainable technology allows bonding chemically CO2 from ambient air on filters and releasing it as concentrated CO2 gas to produce CO2-based fuels and materials. For more information on this technology: http://www.climeworks.com
The first award went to Air Co. (USA) for their Air Vodka from CO2, sun and water (https://aircompany.com/). The second winner was Electrochaea (Germany) with their power to gas technology, based on biological methanation. They make it possible to store renewable energy and recycle CO2 in a cost-effective way (http://www.electrochaea.com/).
The nominees have highlighted the impressive potential of CO2 utilisation, not only in storing energy, producing synthetic fuels and other raw materials, but also in creating CO2-based business to consumer products. CarbonUpCycling Technologies (Canada) (https//:www.carbonupcycling.com) is one of them. Their motto: “Use the pollution of today to build the materials of tomorrow by converting CO2 gas into solid products.” Their consumer product line includes lightweight and durable yoga mats, watches with a CO2-based concrete face and carbon negative bracelets.
Congratulations to all participants! The choice of buying low carbon emission products is now in the hands of the consumers!
